Following Labour’s victory in the 2024 General Election, Lucy Powell MP has been appointed Leader of the House of Commons, a key role in Keir Starmer’s new government. As the first Labour MP to hold this position in 14 years, Lucy is determined to bring real change to Parliament, ensuring it works in the interests of the people, not just politicians.

A New Era for Parliament

As Leader of the House, Lucy is responsible for overseeing how Parliament operates, ensuring government business is properly scrutinised, and leading efforts to modernise the way Westminster works. After years of chaos, scandal, and declining trust in politics, Lucy is committed to raising standards, improving transparency, and making government more accountable. Her key priorities include:

  • Reforming Parliament to make it more open, accessible, and representative of the people it serves.
  • Strengthening standards and ending the culture of cronyism that flourished under the Tories.
  • Making government more accountable, ensuring ministers answer to MPs and the public.
  • Improving working conditions in Parliament, ensuring it is a workplace fit for the modern age.
  • Bringing Parliament into the 21st century, ensuring debates, voting, and scrutiny are more effective.

Delivering for the Country

Lucy’s appointment reflects Labour’s commitment to serious government and a fresh approach to politics. She will play a central role in delivering Labour’s ambitious legislative agenda, helping to drive through key policies on housing, jobs, public services, and security.

Speaking about her new role, Lucy said:
“After 14 years of Tory chaos, it’s time to restore trust in politics and make Parliament work for the people again. I’m determined to modernise the House of Commons, improve standards, and ensure this government delivers on its promises.”

With Labour now in power, Lucy is ready to get to work—turning the page on the past and helping to rebuild Britain for the better.
